People Commuting to Work by Walking

People living in Seattle and those 16-24 years of age were more likely to walk to work than the King County average.

Between 2018-2022, 4.6% King County workers walked to work.    

  • Age: People 16-24 years old (9.2%) were nearly twice as likely to walk to work as the county average. Workers 45-64 years old were less likely than the county average to walk to work, at 2.6%.     

  • Poverty: People with incomes less than 100% of the federal poverty level were the most likely to walk to work in King County at 9.8%. They were more likely to walk to work than people with incomes 200% or more of the federal poverty level.   

  • Region/City/Neighborhood: People living in Seattle were more likely to walk to work (9.2%) than people in other regions of the county. Among cities and neighborhoods, the areas with the highest rates of walking to work were South Lake Union/Cascade/Eastlake (35.5%), Downtown Seattle/Belltown/First Hill (28.5%), University District (28.1%), and Capitol Hill (21.5%).  

  • Trends: The percentage of people who walked to work in King County has decreased from 5.2% in 2019 to 3.9% in 2022. Walking to work also decreased among Seattle residents, from 10.7% in 2019 to 7.2% in 2022.
